How We Evaluate Value
Last updated September 21, 2026
UpgradeOrSave is built around two core signals: Value Score, which weighs an offer's price against its condition, protection, and evidence context, and a plain-language BUY / WAIT / SKIP / CONDITIONAL verdict. Both are shown more prominently than a generic star rating, because a high review score does not tell you whether now is the right time to buy, or whether a cheaper condition tier is the smarter choice.
Comparing condition tiers
We evaluate offers across condition types, not just price, since the "best deal" often depends on which condition tier makes sense for you:
- New — unopened, full manufacturer warranty, sold at standard retail condition.
- Open Box — previously purchased or displayed, typically inspected by the retailer, often at a meaningful discount to new.
- Refurbished — inspected, tested, and restored to working condition by the seller or manufacturer, usually graded (for example Excellent, Good, or Fair) and often backed by a limited warranty.
- Previous Generation — an older model still sold new, compared against the current generation to show what premium you'd pay for the latest version.
Where a retailer's own condition grading doesn't map cleanly onto ours, we preserve rank order (their best tier maps to our best tier) rather than guessing a literal equivalence.
Evidence-based, not invented
Verdicts and scores are derived from captured retailer evidence: current price, availability, condition, and seller information. We do not publish a score or verdict without underlying evidence behind it, and any illustrative or example content on this site is clearly labeled as such rather than presented as a live offer.
Commissions do not influence results
Whether a listing is part of an affiliate program has no effect on its Value Score, verdict, or ranking. See our Affiliate Disclosure for how affiliate links work on this site.
Coverage and limitations
UpgradeOrSave's catalog and retailer coverage are still expanding, and evaluations reflect the data available at the time they were published. Prices and availability can change quickly — always confirm current details on the retailer's site before purchasing.
